The Gansu-Qinghai Grand Loop is one of China's most popular road trip and group tour routes, covering approximately 2,800 kilometers across Gansu and Qinghai provinces. Due to the vast elevation changes, variable climate, and expansive terrain along the route, thorough preparation before departure is essential. This guide covers all the key things to keep in mind for your Gansu-Qinghai journey.
1. Altitude Sickness
The loop passes through high-altitude areas including Qinghai Lake (3,196m), Chaka Salt Lake (3,059m), and Da Qaidam (3,100m). It is recommended to start taking Rhodiola rosea one week before departure. Upon reaching the plateau, avoid strenuous exercise, drink plenty of water, and ensure adequate sleep. If you experience headaches, nausea, or other symptoms, rest promptly and seek medical attention if necessary.
2. Sun and Sand Protection
UV radiation in northwest China is extremely intense — apply SPF50+ sunscreen even on cloudy days. Sunglasses, a sun hat, and sun-protective clothing are the essential trio. In the Gobi Desert and sandy areas, bring a scarf or face mask to protect your mouth and nose from windblown sand.
3. Temperature Differences & Clothing
Day-night temperature differences in the Gansu-Qinghai region can reach 15-20°C. Even in midsummer, mornings and evenings are cool or even cold. Layered dressing is recommended: short sleeves + light jacket + windbreaker/down jacket (essential for Qinghai Lake sunrise and desert camping).
4. Food & Drinks
Northwestern cuisine tends to be salty and spicy, with beef, mutton, and wheat-based foods as staples. When first arriving at high altitude, avoid overeating. Drink plenty of water; moderate consumption of butter tea can help with altitude adaptation. Carry snacks and drinking water, as some road sections are long with limited supply stops.
5. Essential Items Checklist
ID card (mandatory, checked at many points), portable charger, lip balm, moisturizing face cream, common medications (cold medicine, stomach medicine, motion sickness pills), and cash (some remote areas have poor signal and mobile payment is unavailable).
