Mingsha Mountain & Crescent Spring is Dunhuang's most iconic natural landscape, located 5 km south of Dunhuang City. It is a national 5A-level tourist attraction, world-renowned for the miracle of "sand and spring coexisting, sand and water thriving together." For thousands of years, the spring has never been filled by sand nor dried up when the wind stops — a true miracle of nature.
Mingsha Mountain gets its name from the sound produced when the sand shifts. The mountain is composed of red, yellow, green, white, and black flowing sands, stretching about 40 km east-west and 20 km north-south, with the highest elevation at 1,715 meters. Crescent Spring nestles within Mingsha Mountain, shaped like a crescent moon, approximately 150 meters long, 50 meters wide, and 5 meters deep. The crystal-clear water mirrors the blue sky, white clouds, and golden dunes — a scene as beautiful as a painting.
Riding camels across Mingsha Mountain is one of the must-do experiences in Dunhuang. Caravan slowly traverses the golden dunes with camel bells ringing, as if traveling back to the Silk Road a thousand years ago. Climbing to the summit, you can overlook the panoramic view of Crescent Spring. At sunset, golden light bathes the dunes in ever-changing patterns — an absolutely magnificent sight. Additional activities include sand sliding, desert off-road vehicles, and helicopter sightseeing.

Tickets: 110 yuan per person, valid for 2 consecutive days (facial recognition required on first entry).
Opening Hours: Peak season (May–October) 05:00–20:30, off-season (November–April) 07:30–18:00.
Transportation: Only 5 km from Dunhuang city center, 10 minutes by taxi. Tuodada Travel provides pick-up and drop-off service.
Best Time to Visit: Evening is the best time, when you can enjoy both the sunset and Crescent Spring's reflection. In summer, sunset is around 21:00.
Camel Ride: Approximately 100 yuan per person per ride, lasting about 40 minutes.
