Mogao Caves, located on the cliffs at the eastern foot of Mingsha Mountain, 25 kilometers southeast of Dunhuang City, is the world's largest and most complete existing treasure house of Buddhist art. In 1987, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List and is known as the "Oriental Louvre."
Mogao Caves was first built in 366 AD during the Former Qin period, when the monk Le Zun carved the first cave. Successive dynasties including Northern Dynasties, Sui, Tang, Five Dynasties, Western Xia, and Yuan continued construction for approximately 1,000 years. Today, there are 735 caves, 45,000 square meters of murals, and 2,415 painted clay sculptures. This is not only atreasure hall of Buddhist art but also a testament to the confluence of diverse civilizations along the Silk Road.
Entering Mogao Caves, the most breathtaking sights are the exquisite murals and painted sculptures. The murals feature rich content including Buddha preaching scenes, sutra stories, donor portraits, flying apsaras, and ceiling patterns, with colors still vibrant after a thousand years. Cave 96, known as the "Nine-Story Tower," houses a 35.5-meter Maitreya Buddha — the largest statue at Mogao. Cave 17, the "Library Cave," yielded over 50,000 precious cultural relics, considered one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of the 20th century.
