International Visitors Guide

Passport Booking · Bilingual Service · Dining Adjustments · Packing · Travel Benefits · Refund Policy

1. Passport Booking & Airport Pickup

  • Passport Reservation: All attractions require passport booking. Provide clear passport photo page with name, passport number, and expiry date. We can provide bilingual itineraries.
  • Bilingual Pickup: Bilingual sign pickup at airport/railway station. Provide accurate flight/train numbers and arrival time.
  • Mogao Caves: Passport holders can book Mogao Caves tickets. We handle the reservation process — just send us your passport details.

2. Bilingual Service

  • English Materials: We provide bilingual (Chinese-English) itineraries, attraction information sheets, and emergency contact cards.
  • Guide Communication: While not all local guides speak fluent English, we can arrange English-speaking guides for international groups (subject to availability — please request in advance).
  • Translation Support: Our office team can provide real-time phone translation assistance during your trip.

3. Dining Adjustments

  • Dietary Restrictions: Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, halal, or other dietary needs — inform us at least 48 hours in advance and we'll arrange suitable meals.
  • Spice Level: Northwest Chinese cuisine can be spicy and hearty. We can request mild preparation at all restaurants.
  • Western Food: While Dunhuang is known for local cuisine, we can arrange restaurants with Western-style options if needed.

4. Packing for Dunhuang

  • Sun Protection: Essential! SPF50+ sunscreen, wide-brim hat, UV sunglasses, and light long-sleeve clothing.
  • Temperature Layers: Desert climate = hot days, cool nights. Bring layers even in summer. Winter visits require warm thermal clothing (-15°C possible).
  • Comfortable Footwear: Closed-toe shoes for desert terrain. Sand can be hot in summer.
  • Hydration: Bring a reusable water bottle. The dry climate requires extra water intake.
  • Medications: Bring personal medications as pharmacies may not carry specific brands. Basic first aid is provided by our guides.

5. Practical Tips

  • Payment: Alipay and WeChat Pay are widely accepted. Cash (RMB) works everywhere. International credit cards are accepted at major hotels but not at smaller establishments.
  • Mobile Data: Consider getting a Chinese SIM card or international roaming plan. Our guides have mobile WiFi hotspots.
  • Altitude: Dunhuang is at ~1,100m elevation. The Gansu-Qinghai loop reaches up to ~3,800m at some passes. If sensitive to altitude, inform us for route adjustments.
  • Toilets: Major attractions have modern facilities. Remote areas may have basic facilities — carry tissues and hand sanitizer.
  • Safety: Dunhuang is very safe. Normal travel precautions apply. Our guides carry emergency first aid kits.

6. Visa Information

  • Tourist Visa (L Visa): Most international visitors need a Chinese tourist visa. Apply at your local Chinese embassy/consulate.
  • Visa-Free Transit: China offers 72/144-hour visa-free transit at select ports for citizens of many countries. Check if this applies to your nationality.
  • We Can Help: We provide invitation letters for visa applications upon request. Contact us at +86-0937-8839685 for the latest visa policy information.

7. Refund Policy

  • Day Tours: Free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure.
