Located in northeastern Qinghai Province, Qinghai Lake is the largest inland saltwater lake in China and a brilliant pearl on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The lake sits at an elevation of 3,196 meters, covering approximately 4,543 square kilometers with a maximum depth of 21 meters. The azure blue water, like a gemstone, is embraced by the Datong Mountains, Riyue Mountains, Qinghai South Mountains, and Xiangpi Mountains, creating a magnificent plateau lakescape.
The Mongolian name for Qinghai Lake is "Koke Nur," meaning "Blue Sea." It is one of the sacred lakes of Tibetan Buddhism. Every summer (July-August), vast fields of rapeseed flowers bloom along the shore, with golden fields contrasting beautifully against the blue lake water, creating the most iconic scenery of Qinghai Lake.
There are several famous attractions around Qinghai Lake: Erlangjian Scenic Area is the core tourist zone where you can take boat rides on the lake; Bird Island is a paradise for migratory birds, with hundreds of thousands breeding here every spring; Sand Island features the unique sight of golden desert coexisting with blue lake water. Cycling around Qinghai Lake has also become an increasingly popular experience in recent years.
