Essential Packing List for Northwest China Travel - Tuodada Travel

Northwest China travel spans vast territories with dry climates and intense sunlight, so thorough preparation is essential. Below is a detailed packing checklist to help you handle any situation on your journey.

Documents

ID card (mandatory, checked at multiple locations). If you have a student ID, military ID, or senior citizen card, bring those too — some attractions offer discounts.

Sun Protection (Top Priority)

SPF50+ sunscreen (one for face, one for body), sunscreen spray, sunglasses (polarized lenses preferred), wide-brim sun hat, UV protection arm sleeves, and UV protection clothing. UV levels in the Northwest are 3–5 times higher than in cities — one day without protection can cause sunburn.

Sand Protection

Scarf or face mask (Yadan Landform and Mingsha Mountain have strong winds and blowing sand), sealed bags (to protect your phone and camera), and wet wipes (for wiping off sand and dust at any time).

Clothing

Dress in layers: short-sleeve T-shirt + light jacket + windbreaker or lightweight down jacket. At Qinghai Lake sunrise or desert camping, temperatures can drop to 5–10°C, so warm clothing is essential. Comfortable sports shoes or hiking boots.

Skincare

Moisturizer, lip balm (the Northwest is extremely dry and lips crack easily), face masks, and hand cream.

Medications

Cold medicine, stomach medicine, motion sickness pills (some road sections are long), band-aids, Rhodiola (for high-altitude areas like Qinghai Lake), and any personal medications.

Other Items

Power banks (we recommend bringing 2 — some road sections have no charging facilities), insulated water bottle, snacks and dried food, cash (poor signal in remote areas), and plastic bags (for dirty clothes or trash).
